Residential waste services
Rubbish bins are supplied for residential waste.
Waste from building works, renovations, hard waste or e-waste must not be placed in these bins!
Not following this instruction can result in the bins not being emptied which affects all residents. Owners or residents who misuse the residential waste bins may be charged for costs incurred to sort through and remove non-residential waste.
Red lid – General rubbish bins
General household bagged rubbish only. Although these look like an industrial skip bin they will not be picked up if people place items such as construction waste, furniture, metal, unwanted appliances etc in these bins. Bagged rubbish only should be placed in these bins.
Blue lid – Cardboard bin
Please collapse any boxes or cut down as required. This bin is shared between all residents so please do not overload the bin with a large amount of cardboard in the one week or jam cardboard in on angles preventing the bin being filled correctly.
Yellow lid – Recycling
These are for recycling items – mainly glass and hard plastic. Please put your recycling loose into the bin. Never put in plastic bags or tie up.
Polystyrene and Soft plastics such as bags or cling wrap must not be placed in the yellow recycling bin as they cannot be recycled. These items must be placed in the general rubbish bins.
You can find more information about what can be placed in the yellow recycling bins at the City of Melbourne website.
Green lid – Green waste
These are for green waste and food waste only. A caddy and liners can be obtained from City of Melbourne customer service. Bin liners are not necessary, but many people prefer to use them. Only liners that are fully biodegradable should be used. Do not use plastic bags. Biodegradable liners are available from supermarkets.
Purple lid – Glass
The City of Melbourne does not yet provide a separate glass recycling service.
E-waste
E-waste (electronic waste) is anything with a plug, cord or battery. The Victorian Government has banned all e-waste from landfill.
E-Waste must not be placed into any of the bins at 101 Grattan or left in the basement carpark.
Small amounts of e-waste such as batteries, old phones etc can be dropped off at the Kathleen Syme Library and Community Centre – 251 Faraday Street, Carlton.
More information on e-waste drop off locations can be found on the City of Melbourne website
Hard waste
Furniture or other hard waste items must not be placed in the bins, or left in the carpark, foyer or any other area inside or outside the building. This is considered dumping and is a huge environmental issue. There are cameras in the building which can identify people dumping items. The Owners’ Corporation may charge cleanup costs to people who have dumped rubbish.
City of Melbourne provides each owner/resident one free hard rubbish collection each year so please plan ahead when moving out/getting rid of substantial items. More information can be found at the City of Melbourne website.
From time to time the Building Manager will arrange a hard waste collection and notify residents with the time date and pickup location.
Please otherwise let the Building Manager know if you have organised a private hard waste rubbish collection or need more information on how to arrange this.
Items placed outside for collection should not go out more than 24hrs prior to the collection date.
Rubbish in Grattan Place and Hyam Place
From time to time the restaurants in Grattan Place, Hyam Place/Lygon Street overfill their rubbish bins. Birds often spread this rubbish. As well as being an eyesore this can attract rodents and ants. City of Melbourne is responsive to community complaints. The Owners Corporation Committee encourage you to lodge your concerns directly to council online.
