101-107 Grattan Street is a low-rise complex facing Grattan Street between Lygon and Cardigan streets.

Our community is defined by a single plan of subdivision comprising the apartments of 101 Grattan Street and 42 Grattan Place, shops and townhouses facing Grattan Street and the heritage Chapel at 46 Grattan Place.

The complex has two sections commonly known as Stage 1 and Stage 2.

Stage 1 – Apartments and shops

Six shops fronting Grattan Street and 64 apartments accessed with keys and an intercom through the front entrance. There are three stories/levels in this section of the complex – listed as ground, first and second (not first, second, third).

Stage 2 – Apartments, townhouses and Chapel

Two double story terrace houses facing Grattan Street built in the late 1890’s and the Chapel built in 1905 on the corner of Grattan Place. Behind these heritage buildings are 10 red brick apartments, 9 accessed from Grattan Place and one from the front entrance on Grattan Street.

Owners Corporation

101 Grattan St is administered by a single Owners Corporation. All owners are part of this and all share in the upkeep and running of the whole complex. The Owners’ Corporation employs the services of a Owners Corporation Manager, Building Manager and there is an Owners’ Corporation Committee, elected annually at an Annual General Meeting, which all owners are encouraged to attend.


History of our complex

St Joseph’s Receiving Home for Girls (1902 – 1985)

St Joseph’s Receiving Home for Girls was established by Margaret Goldspink in 1902. In 1905 the Receiving Home moved to Grattan Street, Carlton, when it came under the management of the Sisters of St Joseph. It offered shelter to many thousands of pregnant women and also provided short term residential care to children.

The Receiving Home closed in 1985. There is more information at the Find and Connect website
